How do I show we deliver value by operating sustainably?

Properly prepare for a more integrated strategic report.

Challenge

Carillion has been a Gather client for 15 years. As part of their efforts to continuously improve, they wanted to evolve their existing strategic report into an ‘integrated report’ – drawing on some of the thinking in the International Integrated Reporting Framework issued by the International Integrated Reporting Council. The challenge was to show how Carillion puts sustainability at the heart of everything it does so that it can operate in an integrated way to create value for its shareholders and other stakeholders.

Action

Our experience of companies making the transition to integrated reporting suggests that it takes several years to establish the processes and data required to do it successfully. Gather developed a three-year plan that mapped out in detail how Carillion would achieve a fully integrated strategic report. We undertook a thorough gap analysis to establish what work needed to be done, communicating this to senior management to get buy-in and then worked closely with Carillion to help them shape the content.

Impact

Gather helped develop a clear and concise strategic report that puts the value creation story at the heart of the company’s new business model and capitals. The linkage between the business model and risks is complemented by the development of a compelling narrative and an easy-to-follow structure. The online version – a one page scrolling report with content broken down into sections is fully responsive and features sticky navigation. The video masthead is a time-lapse of the construction of the new main stand at Anfield – a static element from the printed report brought to life on an interactive platform. There is more to be done, but Carillion exceeded their first year targets on their journey to achieving a fully integrated strategic report.
